    The very beginning

    Antonio Fluxa, a skilled cobbler, returns to his native Mallorca from England after studying modern shoe production. He brings the island's first sewing machine and an irrepressible desire to innovate. In his hometown of Inca, Antonio sets up a small workshop, the first industrial shoe manufacturer in Mallorca.

    Everything starts with Antonio Fluxa in 1877. Full of inspiration after expanding his shoemaking know-how and skills in England, he sets up a workshop in Inca, Mallorca, which evolves into a family business. The rest is history.

    A Family Business

    Antonio gathers craftspeople who also want to move with the times. Inspired by their Mediterranean home, they handcraft original shoes using the finest materials and the latest machinery. Tradition and craft with a human approach. Antonio’s son, Lorenzo, inherits his father’s enthusiasm for shoes, followed by his son, Lorenzo, who creates Camper in 1975, and his son, Miguel, in 2012. To this day, Camper is a family business.

    Putting Mallorca on the map

    In 1903, Antonio sets up a small workshop in Inca and later mechanizes the process “to produce Goodyear welt quality shoes,” recalls Lorenzo. “My father expanded the production and converted the workshop into one of the best shoe factories in Spain for high-quality traditional shoes.” The Fluxa family business grows, helping to kick-start Mallorca’s shoemaking industry and establish the island as a region renowned throughout Europe for quality footwear production.

    1975, Camper is born

    “In 1975, Spain recovered democracy after forty years, and in its wake came a storm of enthusiasm, freedom, and projects,” says Lorenzo, who officially founds Camper. “Casual footwear was unheard of in 1970s Spain, let alone unisex! We wanted to break with traditional typologies. That’s what we have been doing ever since—never perfect, but always a little better.”

    Our Name and Logo

    Lorenzo commissions a survey to choose a name for his new company. “Groovy” wins, with “Ranger” in second place, then “Camper”. He goes with the third, which means “peasant” in Mallorquín. Mediterranean, authentic, simple. Now the logo: the first designed by Alfonso Martí evolves into the instantly recognizable red and white Camper bridge by Carlos Rolando in 1981.

    Our Mission: Walking with Purpose

    ‘Walk, Don’t Run’ starts as a 2001 campaign for The Walking Society and becomes our slogan, embodying the values of our slow Mediterranean lifestyle. The verb “to walk” has many meanings, all important to our philosophy. With our feet on the ground, we are always moving, progressing, improving, evolving, innovating. We want to create a playful and responsible walking experience that makes people smile.

    Everything we do is rooted in where we’re from—Mallorca. The largest island in the Balearics and Spain is famously known for sun, sand, and shoes. You’ll find our headquarters in Inca, central Mallorca, an area known for shoemaking since the 13th century.

    We’re from Mallorca

    Our island home in the western Mediterranean has 500 kilometers of coastline, endless olive groves, and the dramatic Tramuntana mountains as a backdrop. We're forever connected to our land, traditions, and history. Camper means “peasant”, after all.

    Walk Don’t Run. These three simple words sum up the way we live and look at life. We take it slow, taking everything in along the way.

    We’re from the Mediterranean

    In 2001, we launch The Walking Society campaign to celebrate the region we call home. The Med is our net. Network, that is. The Walking Society is a community open to everyone who wants to make the world a better place. The Walking Society Magazine is a tangible, visual extension of our ethos, traveling the islands of the Mediterranean to shine a light on local cultures, communities, and cool stuff.

    ReCamper

    Our commitment to circularity offers services that help extend the life of our shoes, from cleaning and repairing to recycling, reusing, and refurbishing. Much of this takes place in our workshop, AKA “el taller” at Camper HQ. This fully functioning atelier is where our skilled team creates our ReCrafted collection, which transforms pre-worn, returned, and faulty Camper shoes into special editions.

    Unisex and Inclusivity

    Camaleón, our first-ever shoe, is unisex and almost all our collections since. From the beginning, we have wanted to create footwear that is accessible to everyone. A great example is our Kobarah, available for women and men—heels for all. This idea of genderlessness demonstrates our commitment to inclusivity and making shoes everyone can wear, irrespective of differences.

    ‘Self-service’ is the concept of our very first store in the Spanish city where everything begins to grow. Fernando Amat devises this immersive shopping experience without formalities, where window displays of bags, boxes, and catalogs are a theatrical stage for our shoes to play the leading roles. Posters act like film promos, letting people know what's going on with Camper. Later, with the development of the Together project, the store interior also becomes the star.

    The year that Barcelona hosts the Olympic Games, projecting a new image of Spain around the world, we open our first store outside of our home country. Located in the 6th arrondissement of the French capital, our retail space on rue du Cherche-Midi adapts Fernando Amat’s original store concept.

    Way before pop-ups are a thing, Spanish designer Martí Guixé creates this temporary ‘Walk in Progress’ concept that makes use of our store during the redesign process. “Shops are tools of communication,” he explains. The space is stripped down to stacks of shoeboxes and a blank white wall for customers to write and draw on—in Camper red, of course. Doodles and scribbles reveal the mindset of the local youth.

    The streets of Manhattan’s Soho are home to our first store in the Big Apple. Martí Guixé designs warm red Mediterranean interiors illuminated by Ingo Maurer’s XXL Dome lamps. This move across the Atlantic is indicative of the growth of our ‘Little Great Company’, our slogan that year.

    A new Camper Together project sees our new store next to the Centre Pompidou designed by the Bouroullec Brothers. According to the French designers, the space can “produce special sensations: the red adds warmth, the textiles muffle sounds and give depth, and the household furniture confers an air of simplicity. Backstitched blankets partially cover the walls […] relatively bright colors contrast with the red tone that pervades the entire store.”

    Brazilian design duo Fernando and Humberto Campana transform our new Manhattan store in a Camper Together collaboration. Their ‘transplastic’ concept, born during the brothers’ first trip to Mallorca, tells the fictional story of a world made of synthetic matter. Nature grows from the plastic, feeding off it and eventually overpowering it. All pieces are handcrafted with natural fibers in the designers’ native Brazil.

    Camper Together with the Japanese architect whose signature paper tubes are used to build temporary homes for victims of the Kobe earthquake. In Manhattan, he applies the same principle to the temporary roof of our new store. Inside, his bespoke furniture is reduced to a minimum to create space and light. Angled fin walls display the Camper logo, which reads as a complete word from one direction, but in broken letters from the other.

    This new store concept is an open space and a canvas for artists, changing with the seasons. With graphics by the Bendita Gloria studio, the July 2019 inauguration of the ‘Camper Room’ exhibits work from Barcelona-born artist Antoni Miralda’s 1969 Camouflage series, including his famously autobiographical Soldats soldés. Trompe l'œil wallpaper decorates the walls.

    Our newly remodeled store in Spain’s third largest city is a new retail concept that brings all of our products together under one roof. The two-story space—whose name means ‘House of Camper’ in Mallorquín—showcases our footwear, accessories, CAMPERLAB, Goods and Apparel in store for the first time. Designed by Mallorquín architect Marta Armengol, the contemporary Mediterranean interiors blend industrial with natural materials and raw finishes.

    As its name suggests, CAMPERLAB is a space for exploration and experimentation, not only within footwear design but also in Ready-to-Wear and accessories. In 2019, Achilles Ion Gabriel is appointed creative director to drive the brand’s artistic vision.

    Romain Kremer

    The French fashion designer is CAMPERLAB’s creative director until 2019. From reigniting Mugler menswear to Mallorca, Romain brings his space-age-rave aesthetic to the brand, designing stores and products that speak his visual language. The stores house a definitive selection of styles, including CAMPERLAB exclusives, with a soundtrack of garage, grime, and dubstep from Rinse FM France, the sister radio station of London’s Rinse FM.

    Achilles Ion Gabriel

    The Finnish-born designer is the creative director of CAMPERLAB, driving the brand’s artistic vision and trajectory. Fall / Winter 2020 marks his first collection and a new wave for the brand, joining the dots between craftsmanship and surrealism, newly interpreting the brand’s design aesthetic. CAMPERLAB defines itself through its unpredictable nature, subverting expectations and rewriting the rules of design.

    From the day Antonio sets up his small workshop in Inca, Camper flourishes into a world of creativity, with stores first in Barcelona then worldwide. We also branch out into other areas, from philanthropy and hotels to restaurants and the great outdoors.

    Fundación Camper

    Son Fortesa is a space open to ideas, creativity, education, and the study of culture, hosting workshops and talks by leading international figures. The Summer Workshop is a creative meeting point that has been held here regularly since its creation in 2009. Located in the Alaró valley in central Mallorca, Son Fortesa’s grounds date back to the early 16th century, with the building’s interior restored by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rafael Moneo.

    Casa Camper

    Our boutique hotels in Barcelona and Berlin bring our spirit and values to the world of hospitality. Casa Camper Barcelona opens in 2005 in a 19th-century Gothic building in El Raval, designed by Fernando Amat and Jordi Tió, with a vertical garden, hammocks for siestas, and a green energy emphasis. The second hotel opens in Mitte, Berlin, in 2009, with a complimentary 24/7 Tentempié snack bar. Our casa is your casa.

    Dos Palillos

    In 2008, Camper and Albert Raurich, chef de cuisine at Ferran Adrià’s legendary El Bulli restaurant, embark on a new venture. Dos Palillos opens next to Casa Camper Barcelona, its name meaning “two sticks” to symbolise the journey from plate to mouth. The concept is Asian-style plates fused with the Spanish tapa philosophy, earning a Michelin star.

    Camper FoodBALL

    It isn’t a bar and it isn’t a restaurant—FoodBALL is a food and a way of looking at culture. FoodBALL is creative, simple, light, and natural. It is a food based on rice balls and condiments, served in natural and biodegradable wrappers. The first FoodBALL opens in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella in 2005 with an interior designed by Martí Guixé and closes in 2008.

    Camper Goods

    In 2021, we launch a curated collection of high-quality, functional objects, homeware, and decor that bring joy to daily rituals. Under the motto “Good tools for a good life”, Goods offers industrial design classics, Mediterranean handicrafts, and Camper-exclusive creations. On this new adventure, we celebrate innovative design and the simple Mediterranean lifestyle that has defined us since the beginning.

    In 2022, Camper and Kilian Jornet blaze a new trail with NNormal, a new outdoor sportswear brand. We partner with the world-renowned mountaineer and trail runner on a performance range designed and tested between the shores of Mallorca and the fjords of Norway. NNormal’s products reflect our shared philosophy: to inspire people to enjoy and respect nature. Timeless gear that’s built to last, functional, and performance-oriented.
