Natural Materials
MaterialsSourcing innovative and renewable natural materials that offer us new and better ways to be responsible.
CottonCotton is one of the most commonly used natural fabrics in the world. Derived from the round, fluffy fibers found in the seeds of cotton plants, we have relied on this natural resource for centuries. Its softness and lightweight nature, exceptional breathability, and ability to retain heat have made cotton popular for centuries. However, this widespread demand is damaging our planet because cotton plantations need huge amounts of water. What is more, exploitative practices are often found in its cultivation.
How is our cotton more responsible?- We aim to replace all the cotton in our collection with more sustainable sources, including recycled and certified organic cotton.
- We are a member of the Better Cotton Initiative, established to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment where it grows, and better for the sector’s future.
- During Summer 2021, we introduced recycled and organic cotton options to reduce our environmental impact, and we will keep introducing more and more in our future collections.
- Our regular collaborations with the Ethical Fashion Initiative facilitate the sourcing of better cotton from a small team of women in Burkina Faso in West Africa, which creates a positive social impact on producers and their communities.
Our cotton targets- Maintain our use of 100% sustainably sourced cotton that is either recycled or organic–the best cotton in terms of traceability as engineered seeds and hazardous chemicals are devoid from the process.
- Improve the finish and dyes used in our cotton fabrics to avoid the use of toxic chemicals.
- By 2025, we will have introduced certified regenerative cotton practices through our partners.
WoolWool is a natural fiber that has been sourced from animals for hundreds of years. Fully biodegradable, wool is renowned for its durability and thermal insulating properties.
How is our wool more responsible?- All our wool is sourced from the United Kingdom and New Zealand so that it is 100% mulesing-free to guarantee respectful animal welfare practices.
Our wool targets- Work towards better traceability with a new wool certification.
- Implement new regenerative sources and recycling processes to ensure high quality and long-lasting performance.
TENCEL™ LyocellBecause we care about innovation and the environment, we have introduced new natural, manmade fibers with excellent environmental credentials like TENCEL™ Lyocell.
Originating from renewable raw material wood, TENCEL™ Lyocell is harvested from controlled sources that are FSC® or PEFC™ certified. These botanic fibers are manufactured using environmentally responsible production methods that recycle water, reducing its impact by 95% compared with conventional cotton.
Our TENCEL™ Lyocell targets:- Extend our use of TENCEL™ Lyocell by introducing one new material containing this fiber each season.
- Attempt to develop TENCEL™ Lyocell blends that can be recycled, since we believe it is the greatest alternative to synthetics and standard cotton.
Sugarcane EVAA natural plant-based material and renewable energy resource, sugarcane is a more responsible alternative to pollutants like plastic.
How is our EVA more responsible? For our Fall/Winter 2021 collection, we introduced a new outsole innovation composed of 30% sugarcane and 70% lightweight EVA. Sourced from our supplier Finproject, this bio-based sugarcane outsole is incorporated across several lines.
Our sugarcane EVA targetsUse sugarcane and EVA material in more lines within our collections.
Natural RubberHarvested from tropical trees and plants, natural rubber is an essential raw material with a high tear and tensile strength. Durable and abrasion-resistant, rubber is impervious to extreme temperatures and water swell, making it an ideal waterproof material for outsoles.
How is our natural rubber more responsible?- We partner with the best suppliers, Michelin, Forever, and Vibram, to ensure our products are of the highest quality and durability.
- For Spring/Summer 2021, we introduced two new outsoles, one made with 40% natural rubber compounds and another mixed with a natural rubber compound (40%) and recycled rubber compound (23%).
Our natural rubber targets- Keep producing more outsoles with natural rubber from the best suppliers.
- Work towards better natural rubber outsoles to maximize durability and quality for a more long-lasting product.
