Horses on Hydra
A symbol of a distinctive island
The Walking Society
Imagine a life without cars, a place where horses are the backbone of public transportation. These small yet strong creatures move people and goods around the island, harking back to quieter and simpler times before motorized vehicles, which were banned here in the 1960s.
The slow pace of island life is reflected by the steady rhythm of hooves that carry visitors along rugged mountain paths to explore the coastline and the peaceful essence of Hydra away from the bustling port.
Every year, the Greek Animal Welfare Foundation visits to check up on the treasured steeds that are the equine anchor of Hydra.
