After training as a sculptor at the University of Vermont, the artist moved to New York and entered the world of fashion, becoming involved in the field of artistic wardrobe design for the theatre and music groups. Her designs for the band Gogol Bordello were featured in the Whitney Biennial in 2001, when she launched her first men's collection. Rachel Comey's signature style, halfway between rock and vintage, was a success with the guys but it also appealed to girls, who bought up the smaller men's sizes in order to sport the label's designs.
